THE deputy minister of Local Government, Public Works a National Housing Joel Biggie Matiza yesterday said the audit report on the illegal structures in Chitungwiza and Seke rural areas is almost complete and Government would provide alternative accommodation for people whose houses will be demolished.
He said this in the National Assembly while responding to questions on what Government was doing to alleviate the suffering of people whose houses face demolition.

“We as a Government have a proper programme to address what we are looking at as a riotous situation where in all our suburbs people are building willy- nilly and disregarding by-laws,” he said.

“We have come up with a programme where we did meet the people who are affected and we have met them and we have told them what we want to do and they have fully understood.

“What we also did was to send an audit team on the ground and they have almost completed and now they are compiling the report.
“And based on that report we are going to take action that will help those people who are settled in dangerous areas.”

Deputy Minister Matiza said some of the houses illegally constructed on wetlands were already cracking while wells sunk in those areas where mixing with water containing faecal matter exposing the residents to cholera and other diarrhoeal diseases.

“We want such a person to stay at a proper place that will not harm him or her and we will find a best place and a healthy place for these people,” he said.

Government, he said, would soon launch a national housing programme to address the issue of accommodation shortages countrywide.
The housing backlog stands at 1,5 million countrywide and Government in its economic blueprint, Zim Asset has targeted to construct 250 000 houses to address the issue.

Deputy Minister Matiza added that his ministry was also on a clean up campaign countrywide to address the issue of littering and waste management.

Meanwhile Deputy Minister Matiza said the issue of the Shopping Mall that was constructed at a wetland adjacent to the National Sports Stadium was being looked at.

“We are looking at that matter and as you know there are no operations going on there but we will get back to you,” he said.
Other ministers who fielded questions from the floor on various issues were Senior Minister Cde Simon Khaya Moyo, Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Minister Dr Joseph Made, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Walter Mzembi, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Cde Lazarus Dokora and Small and Medium Enterprises and Cooperative Development Minister Sithembiso Nyoni.
