African Union Commission chairperson, Dr Moussa Faki Muhammad has challenged legislators on the continent to rekindle the spirit of pan-Africanism which he said had been eroded.
Dr Faki Muhammad said this today while making a virtual address to the Pan-African Parliament gathered in Midrand, South Africa, for the Fourth Ordinary Session of the Sixth Pan-African Parliament.
PAP, led by its president Chief Fortune Charumbira is set to discuss various issues affecting the African continent, which include drought, climate change, conflict and trade, among other issues.
In his address, Dr Faki Muhammad bemoaned the continued erosion of the pan-Africanism spirit.
“One challenge we have is the decline of the pan-African spirit, a growing egoism, self-interest,” he said.
“This has weakened our moral capacity. Today, more than ever, the work of PAP is to fill this gap and represent the voice of the people.”
Chief Charumbira later signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Speaker of the National Assembly for Belarus, Mr Igor Sergeyenko, aimed at deepening cooperation between the two institutions.
Mr Sergeyenko officially opened the Fourth Ordinary Session of the Sixth Pan-African Parliament on Monday.
