NATIONAL Athletics Association of Zimbabwe have compiled a long-list of athletes that are eligible to compete at the AUSC Region 5 Games scheduled for Lesotho in December.

The bi-annual games will be held in Maseru from December 2 to 12.

And NAAZ over the weekend held a track and field selection event in Bulawayo. A week ago, the Harare Athletics Board held a similar event at the National Sports Stadium A arena for the athletes born in 2004 and 2005.

NAAZ are in the process of accrediting these athletes for submission of a long list to the host country as per requirement. The final list will be submitted later, and this will have the final events and names of the participants.

National youth and juniors athletics coach Briad Nhubu says after a long lay-off due to lockdown restrictions it was necessary to refresh their database by offering an opportunity to all the budding athletes.

“We came up with a list of athletes who are available. The two competitions in Harare and Bulawayo gave an opportunity to the athletes and we were able to come up with a list of athletes who are still actively involved in sport.

“We will come up with a final list once we get the instructions from the Sports Commission regarding the delegation numbers.

“So far we have managed to accredit 14 boys and 12 girls that have submitted their information and some are still sending their information,” said Nhubu.

Nhubu says they will look at where their strength lies as a country and are usually guided by that as they work on their final selection for the games that are held after every two years.
