SEASONED campaigner Terry Allberry of Bulawayo reigned supreme during the second round of the 2018 hp lubes/Castrol Drag Racing Series which was held at Donnybrook Raceway in Harare on Sunday.

Even the on-going Soccer World Cup could not keep local drag racing fans away as once again thousands of spectators thronged the popular motorsport venue to support their favourite vehicles and competitors.

More than 3 000 local motorsport enthusiasts made their way to Donnybrook on Sunday to watch the country’s top drag racers in action.

The event saw everyone of the Sables Dragpro Drag Racing Series’ fastest Drag motorcars competing within their respective classes, settling “grudge matches” and out to beat their own personal best times.

Competition amongst the top fastest  vehicles of the day was fierce, but it ultimately saw Allberry’s Methanol-powered V8 Dragster Rail posting the fastest time of 10.42 seconds, bettering his previous impressive 10.471 seconds. Allberry did not disappoint as he thundered up the drags’ quarter-mile straight in his impressive dragster.

The nitrous fed V8 Cobra driven by Alan Cacace and Kevin Allmark made a surprise return to the track on Sunday, taking the crown of Top Eliminator in the end of day Eliminations event.

The fastest motorcycle of the day was one of the sport’s pioneers in Zimbabwe, Angelo Perreira, on his Suzuki GSXR, with a time of 10.339 seconds but it was Darryl Carlsson, also on a Suzuki GSXR, who took the end of day Eliminations crown.

The Sables/Dragpro Series now boasts having three motorcars in the 10-second bracket, two motorcars in the 11-second bracket and several in the lower 12-second quarter mile bracket.

The much talked about “Top Ten List” has undergone some dramatic changes at this June event  and the elapsed times of these top vehicles is testament to the progression of the sport of drag racing, especially given the fact drivers/riders are not racing on a specifically prepared drag strip.

The next 2018 Drag Racing Series event will be held on August 26 and it’s anybody’s guess who will reign supreme at this event.

Drag racing is now the country’s most popular motorsport event, thanks to the tireless efforts of Mano Zevgolis, his wife Susan and their team at Sables Dragpro Club who have over the past few years been working round the clock to promote this exciting motor racing competition.

The 2018 Drag Racing Series is proudly partnered by hp lubes/Castrol, AA Zimbabwe, Emergency Rooms 24, Lighthouse Print and Turbo Solutions Africa.
