All set for Mutasa Central Ward 10 by-election

ALL is set for the Mutasa Central Ward 10 council by-election slated for next month, with nomination of candidates having been completed on Tuesday.

The contest would be between Zanu-PF candidate Cde Magret Tindirika and Rose Tanyaradzwa Mukodza of MDC-Alliance, who are vying for the seat after Frank Chitembwe was booted out following a court convicted him of political violence.

Chitembwe, who won the local authority seat in last year’s harmonised elections, was convicted of participating in the chaotic violence that rocked the country in January this year.

Chitembwe was sentenced to three years behind bars by a Mutare magistrate.

The court set aside one year of his sentence for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within that period, leaving him to serve two years in jail.

He is currently serving his term at Mutare Farm Prison.

Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) provincial chief elections officer Mr Moffat Masabeya said the election will be held on May 11.

“Nomination is currently underway and we are set to make an announcement. The elections will be held on May 11,” he said.
