Air Marshall Shiri’s son dies

Titus Takudzwa Chikerema, the son of Air Force of Zimbabwe commander Air Marshall Perrance Shiri, died yesterday at Manyame Air Base Hospital after a short illness. He was 21.

Chikerema was born in Harare and did his primary education at Hellenic Primary School and later went to Watershed College in Marondera for his secondary education.

At the time of his death, he was at Direct Contact College in Harare pursuing academic studies. He was a gifted rugby player.
In a statement, the chief of staff supporting services, Air Vice Marshall Shebba Shumbayaonda expressed shock at Chikerema’s death.

“It was heart wrenching to learn of the untimely death of a young man who was full of life and energy. On my on behalf, officers and members of the Air Force of Zimbabwe, I would like to express my deepest sorrow and sadness to the Chikerema family for their loss.

“I want to assure the Chikerema family that we will stand shoulder to shoulder with them at their time of need,” she said.
Air Vice Marshall Shumbayaonda described Chikerema as a lively young man who was a bundle of energy and destined for greatness.

“Titus was hard working and always ready to make himself useful whenever he was called upon to do so. He was respectful to all people and always willing to assist in any way he could.

“Titus exhibited a high level of maturity beyond his age at such a tender age. When most young people of his age were playing video games in their bedrooms, he had a great passion for farming, especially cattle ranching.

“He always made it a point to avail himself at the farm on his own,” she said.
Mourners are gathered at number 18 Gora Close, Borrowdale in Harare.

He will be buried tomorrow at Musoni Village, under Chief Mutekedza in Chikomba district at 11am.
