Gweru-based dancehall sensation Legion, has released a song to commemorate the city’s 100 years of existence. Legion whose real name is Wilton Isheanesu Doba collaborated with another dancehall artist Aisha Nhara who is daughter to reggae musician Man Soul Jah, as well as Gweru producer Oskid for the single.
The song which is simply titled “Gweru”, is about the milestones of the city including its celebratory moments as well as famous individuals that have helped put Gweru on the arts map.

The “Mudhara Wemangoma” hit-maker said he came up with the song as a dedication to his hometown where he was born and bred and where he is still residing.

“I was born in Gweru, I grew up here and I’m still in Gweru now as an adult, so this is just a reflection of the love that I have for my hometown.

“I actually feel honoured to be part of the milestone event and to be mentioned one day as being part of the event is so motivating,” explained Legion.

The song mentions some of the iconic musical figures to emerge from Gweru who include the likes of the late Paul Matavire, gospel artist Mathias Mhere, urban groover Madiz amongst others.

“There are a number of famous events and names in Gweru but it is unfortunate that we couldn’t mention everything and everyone, but the city is really rich in talent. There are also soccer greats such as Sunday Chidzambwa and Maxwell Dube amongst many others from different fields.”

Gweru came into existence in 1894 when the first residential stands were pegged but it was in 1914 when it had a municipality with its original name being “Ikwelo” which is a Ndebele word meaning “The Steep Place”.

Legion is now working on his second album after his debut “Ghetto Buoy” saw him becoming a household name in the city of progress.
