70th Anniversary of Founding of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

On September 9, 1948, the DPRK, the first people’s democratic state in the East, was founded.

Korea was turned into a colony of Japanese imperialists (1905-1945). Kim Il Sung, hero of the Korean nation, waged an arduous anti-Japanese struggle for 15 years to win back the country. In August, 1945, Korea was liberated by the general attack of the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army led by him and all-people resistance.

After liberation, he led the people to build a new Korea in which exploitation and oppression were abolished and all the working people could lead a happy life. Such democratic reforms as agrarian reform, law on nationalization of major industries and law on gender equality were put into force; this enabled the peasants to become owners of land, the workers to become masters of their factories, and the women to be fully-fledged masters of society. People, who had been oppressed and exploited for thousands of years, became masters of the country, many of them being elected deputies to power organs. The founding of the DPRK constituted a new, brilliant page of the history of the Korean people’s struggle for building an independent and sovereign state.

The history of 70 years of the DPRK was beset with continuous trials and difficulties; the road to independence that the country had chosen was never plain sailing, typical challenges being the fierce Korean war (1950-1953), war threat which has lasted for scores of years, and extreme economic difficulties in the late 1990s caused by the imperialists’ manoeuvres to isolate and stifle the country. Such were very difficult to overcome. Nevertheless, the Korean people never gave up their choice, overcame all the challenges facing the country, and turned the country into a powerful state, independent in politics, self-supporting in the economy and self-reliant in national defence, a power admired by the world.

Korea, a backward, colonial agrarian country in the past, realized the epochal task of socialist industrialization in such a short span of 14 years. It also built self-supporting national economy, composed of powerful heavy industry which is capable of manufacturing state-of-the-art equipment like artificial satellite and CNC machine as it wanted, modern light industry and other branches. The Seventh Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea, held in 2016, set out the goal of transforming the country’s economy into a knowledge-based economy by putting it on a Juche-oriented, modern and IT footing. The Third Plenary Meeting of the Seventh Central Committee of the WPK held in April this year advanced a new strategic line of concentrating the whole strength of the country on socialist economic construction.

In the people-centred socialist country, in which people are the masters of everything and everything serves them, such national measures for the people have been put into force as free medical care and universal free compulsory education, and building houses at state expense. Before liberation, there was not even one university, and the country had only a dozen scientists and technicians; now the country has developed into a civilized state with hundreds of universities and more than one million intellectuals, and there is no illiterate person. It is the only tax-free country in the world. The human rights of the working people are fully guaranteed, and the country has become a large harmonious family, in which all the people help and lead one another forward.

The Korean people, who had been subjected to the fate of colonial slavery, directed their first and foremost efforts to strengthening their national defence capabilities. Through the scores of years of arduous efforts, they have built up their defence capabilities with which they can repulse any aggressive forces. Now, it has attained the status of a strategic nation recognized by the whole world.

That the country, which has a small territory and population and where backwardness and poverty prevailed, achieved such a status in only 70 years is ascribable to the guidance by its leaders. President Kim Il Sung and General Kim Jong Il were great persons whom the world still admires and respects boundlessly. Today Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un, an outstanding political leader in modern ages, is enjoying the attention of the whole world. His lead in the creation of a peaceful environment on Korean peninsula and in Northeast Asia is striking the world with admiration. The DPRK will surely shape a more splendid future under his leadership.

The Social Root of the DPRK

Assisting the army and helping the people–these expressions widespread in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea are a crystallization of the reality of the country, where the unity in ideology and fighting mettle between the army and people has been realized and socialism is safeguarded by dint of its might.

The people assisting the army and the army helping the people is a traditional trait of the country. President Kim Il Sung, founder of socialist Korea, put forward in the period of the anti-Japanese armed struggle the ideology of the great army-people unity, as expressed in the slogan, “As fish cannot live without water, so guerrilla cannot live without the people.”

Since then, the trait began to strike its root.

The Korean guerrillas achieved the cause of national liberation through a do-or-die struggle against the strong Japanese army although they enjoyed no state support nor assistance from a regular army, and the Korean army shattered the myth of the “mightiness” of the enemy and won victory in the fierce Korean war, as they helped the people sincerely and the people assisted them self-sacrificingly.

The trait based on the great army-people unity is displayed on a higher stage at present.

The Korean People’s Army has put forward many slogans, one of them being “Let us take upon ourselves both national defence and socialist construction!” This slogan demonstrates its ennobling character as a defender of the people and creator of their happiness, as well as its will to take the lead in economic construction.

The army is now playing the vanguard role in the political, economic, cultural and other fields in the country. Its role as a pacesetter and activities as a shock force in economic construction is not confined to labour assistance. What is most important is that it plays the vanguard role in achieving oneness in ideology and fighting spirit; in other words, it ensures that all members of society learn from its revolutionary and militant ideology and fighting spirit. In the process of this, the unity is realized of ideology and fighting spirit of the army and the people, and this unity becomes the most revolutionary and solid one, incomparable and unbreakable–this is the ideology of the great army-people unity.

It can be said that the army and the people with same ideology and fighting spirit are closer than their respective kinsman. This relationship is a source of their strength with which they overcome any difficulties.

The relationship between the army and the people helping each other has developed into the unity of their mental and moral traits and action.

The service personnel are doing the lion’s share in the projects, large and small, all aimed at promoting people’s wellbeing, like building power stations, livestock farms, fish farms, modern bases for cultural and leisure activities, and even laying out people’s neighbourhoods.

Typical example is the world-class Ryomyong Street, which was built in less than one year by dint of the army-people unity. There are many other architectural structures which are representative of the people-army unity such as army-people power stations and army-people bridges. This shows that the army and the people of the country always have one mind and one purpose.

The people’s enthusiasm for assisting the army is great. This is expressed by the national conference of active supporters of the army held now and then. It is quite natural that this country is ever-victorious.

Rallied firmly behind Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un, the army and the people of the DPRK will achieve miraculous successes and innovations in defending their socialist country and in building socialism.

Why Korean Style of Socialism Is Invincible

The US and its vassal forces have tenaciously resorted to sanctions and pressure against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea for several decades. On September 12, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2375 against the DPRK. Instead of yielding, the DPRK is countering the sanctions resolution with harder line, and achieving miraculous successes in building a powerful socialist country.

People in the world wonder how the country could defend its own sovereignty for several decades and now leap forward to achieve the status of a socialist power, standing face to face with the imperialists and dominationists.

Many of them, who have visited the country, ascribe the reason to the leaders of the country.

President Kim Il Sung (1912-1994), founding father of socialist Korea, was the greatest of great men, who was recognized by the world. Jimmy Carter, former president of the United States, stated that President Kim Il Sung was greater than George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln, the most illustrious early US presidents, all combined. Francois Mitterrand, former president of France, said that President Kim Il Sung was a great head of state, and that he was the greatest of great men, who were active in the present era from the days after the Second World War.

Chairman Kim Jong Il was a peerless great man, who defended and added lustre to the Korean-style socialism in the political turmoil of the 20th century and against the extreme sanctions and pressure of the US and its vassal forces. He formulated Songun politics as the basic political mode of socialism for the first time in history and developed the country into a manufacturer and launcher of artificial satellite and possessor of nuclear weapons. He smashed the theory of conjecture of the US and its vassal forces that the DPRK would implode in three days, in three months or in three years, and opened a way to building a powerful socialist country.

Today the DPRK has greeted a heyday of its development under the leadership of Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un. Not long after he began to lead the country, Hong Kong newspaper Asia Times predicted that Kim Jong Un would surely be recorded as one of the greatest national heroes and patriots in the 5 000-year-long history of Korea. Now it has turned to be true.

To cope with the increasing nuclear threat by the US, Kim Jong Un advanced the line of promoting economic construction and building up the nuclear forces simultaneously, and wisely led the work of perfecting the nuclear forces of the country. Now the country possesses ICBM that can reach the US mainland and H-bomb loadable onto it. As a result, the country attained the status of a power and the global political landscape has changed completely.

As moves for sanctions by the hostile forces are growing more vicious, he leads all the service personnel and people to uphold the banner of self-reliance and self-development. By fully displaying the spirit of self-development first, they are achieving miraculous successes in developing science and technology and building up the economy one after another and ushering in the Mallima era, an era of new prosperity, thus thwarting the moves for sanctions by the hostile forces. Western mass media report: Even though the DPRK is under extreme sanctions, its economy is developing; particularly, last year the country achieved rapid growth in its economy to the admiration of the world.

Succeeding the intentions of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, who changed politics into love for the people for the first time in human history, Kim Jong Un has turned the whole society into a large, harmonious family that is united with love and affection.

The reality of the country, in which the people support their leader with loyalty calling him their father and the leader devotes his all for their happiness, cannot but strike the world with wonder.

As it is led by the great leader, socialism of Korea will be invincible for ever.

Kim Jong Un by His Speeches

Kim Jong Un’s first formal speech was broadcast live on April 15, 2012, when the military parade and public procession of Pyongyang citizens were held to mark the centenary of the birth of Kim Il Sung (1912-1994), who is now revered as the eternal President of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Among the spectators standing at Kim Il Sung Square, the venue of the ceremonious event, were a host of correspondents and other journalists from the international organizations and foreign countries such as China, Russia, the US, Japan, Germany and Britain.

With the beginning of his speech, all cameras were turned on the supreme leader of the DPRK. The audiences in the country and other parts of the world listened attentively to this historic, unexpected speech.

In a few days the sensational news was published via over 12 000 media services–newspapers, magazines, radios and internet homepages. Attracting hundreds of millions of audiences, it was reported time and again in prime time, to the effect that the DPRK greeted the dawn of Kim Jong Un’s era and the young leader inspired his people to forge ahead for final victory.

Also hitting the headlines were his other speeches on later occasions–the joint national meeting of the Korean Children’s Union organizations held in celebration of the 66th anniversary of its founding; the banquet arranged to mark the 52nd anniversary of the start of Kim Jong Il’s Songun-based revolutionary leadership; the Fourth National Conference of War Veterans; the military parade and public procession of Pyongyang citizens held in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Workers’ Party of Korea; the inauguration ceremony of the Paektusan Hero Youth Power Station; the Ninth Congress of Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League. The mass media commented on these speeches as embodying the DPRK leader’s ideology and faith, matchless courage and grit; reflecting his outstanding philosophy, foresight and keen insight based on scientific strategy and tactics; mirroring his ennobling view of the people and his principle of loving them; demonstrating to the world the revolutionary climate established by the Workers’ Party of Korea, whose mode of existence is to make selfless, devoted efforts for the good of the people.

In addition, 75 000 mass media have published his New Year addresses as the front-page news. Especially, this year’s address caused a surging wave of welcome and support. The press in south Korea and many other countries described it as a speech exceptional in style and content, an assurance of no war on the Korean peninsula, a positive sign marking a new phase in north-south relations and a message heralding a new era of peace.

This proved to be a watershed event with a ripple effect: détente and thaw in bilateral relations on the peninsula, two rounds of inter-Korean summits, three visits to China and the first-ever DPRK-US summit.

A European figure said: It seems that Kim Jong Un anticipated these radical developments. It would be more correct to say that such notable change is the result of the supreme leader’s initiative and bold approach.
