5 envoys present credentials

Five new ambassadors from Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Qatar and Trinidad and Tobago presented their credentials to President Mugabe at State House yesterday. Speaking to journalists soon after the presentation, Qatar ambassador Mr Salem Abdulla Al-Jaber pledged that Qatar Airways would fly to Harare. “We look forward to open Qatar Airways, as you know we have one of the biggest national airline,” he said. “We are now flying to Johannesburg and we have 10 flights per week.”

Mr Al-Jaber said he had fulfilled one of his dreams, that of meeting the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.
Japanese ambassador Mr Yoshi Hiraish said his country would explore all possible areas of co-operation.

“We will co-operate in all areas where Japan has something to contribute,” he said. “I am committed to do everything to help bilateral co-operation.”
Mr Hiraish said there were a lot opportunities that could be explored between the two countries.

Trinidad and Tobago ambassador Mr Harry Partap said his country and Zimbabwe could explore co-operation in many areas such as culture and tourism.
He said the two countries’ bilateral relations were enhanced by the just-ended Harare International Carnival where his country sent performers.
Mr Partap said the musical instruments used by the group from his country during the carnival were unique.

“It is the only musical instruments that have been created in the 20th century,” said.
Mr Partap said the musical group was successful despite the fact that they started from a poor background.

He said an exchange programme would be mooted to allow artists such as sculptures in Zimbabwe to have an appreciation of what happens in his country.
Republic of Korea ambassador Mr Yongkyu Kwon said he would explore ways to deepen economic co-operation with Harare.
Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi and Secretary for the Ministry Ambassador Joe Bimha and other senior Government officials attended the ceremony.
