3 family members perish in horror crash

FOUR people died on the spot, including three family members, while four others were seriously injured when a vehicle they were travelling in overturned last Thursday along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road. The accident occurred at the 393km peg at around 5am. Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the accident.She said the deceased have been identified as Noel Chiruva (49), Vongai Chiruva (age not given), Ruvarashe Chiruva (5) all of No. 611 Nguhuma Crescent, Victoria Falls and Mazenzela Nyakumbi (49) of Aerodrome, Victoria Falls.

“The driver of a Toyota Granvia, who had seven passengers on board and was speeding failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the vehicle.

“The vehicle overturned and landed on its right side, killing people on the spot,” Snr Asst Comm Charamba said.

She said four people including the driver were injured and were admitted at Victoria Falls Hospital while the bodies of the deceased were ferried to the hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is concerned with the loss of lives through reckless drivers. Drivers are urged to avoid travelling at night and speeding when visibility is poor,” she said.

Thirteen people died, including five family members, in separate road traffic accidents that occurred between last Friday and Monday in Mvuma and Mvurwi.

Police said 10 people were seriously injured during the accidents.

In one of the accidents, six people died, while three others were injured when an Opel Corsa pick-up truck they were travelling in veered off the road and rammed into trees near the 214km peg along the Harare- Masvingo Road in Mvuma last Friday.

The accident occurred near Chaka Business Centre at around 7.20am.

On Saturday, five family members died in Mvurwi when a Honda CRV they were travelling in veered off the road and overturned.

The accident occurred at the 98km peg along the Mazowe-Centenary Road.
