President Mugabe’s 91st birthday celebrations will be held in Victoria Falls under the theme “Celebrating the birth of Gushungo, the icon of Zimbabwe’s revolution and champion of youth empowerment”.Speaking yesterday, Zanu-PF National Youth League secretary Cde Pupurai Togarepi, said the theme highlighted President Mugabe’s revolutionary ideals, charismatic leadership and selfless dedication to Zimbabwe and Africa.

“This is a birthday celebration by the youths to the President as their liberation icon. It puts into consideration what he has done for them in terms of empowerment, freedom, access to education, health facilities, land and other resources.”

This years’ 29th edition of the 21st February Movement celebrations will be held at the Elephant Hills hotel and a musical gala would be held at Chinotimba Stadium in the resort town.

President Mugabe’s recent election to the African Union chair has added pomp and funfair to the annual event which will be held on February 28.

Cde Togarepi said the theme also underscored President Mugabe’s determination to fight for people’s rights. “We said we need to consider his principled position to defend the rights of the people. He has not been afraid to defend the rights of the disadvantaged in the world,” he said.

“He is a champion of our revolution. You find that now women, the disadvantaged and young people below the age of 35 can sit in Parliament because he created equality in all aspects. Equality not only economically, but also in terms of access to health facilities, education, employment and natural resources in general,” said Cde Togarepi.

Zanu-PF National Youth League is the traditional organiser of the event since its establishment in 1986, and President Mugabe is the Patron.
