THE Elena Barraquer Foundation of Spain, in conjunction with local doctors, is set to perform free cataract surgeries at Chitungwiza Central Hospital next week.

The visit by Barraquer Foundation is being facilitated by local doctors under the banner of Professional Women, Executives and Business Women’s Forum (PROWEB) in Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF).

PROWEB president Dr Grace Muradzikwa  said they were targeting 200 patients to undergo the surgery. She added that free screening process is set to begin this Saturday.

“We are partnering with the Elena Barraquer Foundation of Spain to donate eye cataract services for a targeted number of 200 patients,” she said.

“A medical team of six doctors will be coming to Zimbabwe to perform the operations from the 23rd to the 28th of September 2019 at Chitungwiza Central Hospital.

“From 21 to 22 September we are going to have free screening at Kunaka Rural Hospital in Seke, Mahusekwa District Hospital in Chihota, Marondera Hospital and Chitungwiza Central Hospital.”

Dr Muradzikwa said their objective was to have the programme done annually.

“It is our intention that this mission be repeated on a yearly basis with a larger team of doctors pergforming a total of 500 free eye operations, including dispensing glasses where required,” she said.

The Barraquer Foundation is an offshoot of a top Spanish eye hospital in Barcelona, which has for years undertaken philanthropic eye projects in East Africa. This is their first mission in Zimbabwe.
