Two bodies of trapped miners at Prince Phoenix Mine popularly known as Kitsiyatota in Bindura were retrieved yesterday.

Mines and Mining Development Deputy Minister Polite Kambamura visited the mining site on Wednesday.

He said the ground at the mining site was weak and could not sustain mining activities.

“We received help from Freda Rebecca Mine and we managed to identify the position of the bodies and we are in the final stages of retrieving the victims.

“We urge miners to desist from working in swampy areas because the ground will be weak and can collapse any time. This ground was not competent enough and this led to the accident.

“I spoke to the families of the trapped miners and we assured them that all efforts are being put to ensure that the bodies are retrieved.”

One of the victims is Reward Vheremu (18) and his mother, who travelled from Chitungwiza said she did not have much information about the incident.

“He was staying in Bindura with his sister doing manual jobs for survival. I am praying that my son is still alive,” she said.

A small-scale miner, Harvey Mangwaza said they mine in the same shaft and when they arrived at the site on Wednesday morning, part of the shaft had collapsed.

Meanwhile, Freda Rebecca Mine who repossessed the Kitsiyatota claim has invited artisanal miners to form properly registered consortiums for safe mining activities.
