TWO people died while eleven others were injured in two road accidents that occurred over the weekend in Mashonaland East Province.

The first accident occurred on July 17, 2022, around 2 pm on the 70 km peg along the Murewa-Madicheche Road where the driver of a Peugeot 306 Mr Panganai Mutize lost control of his vehicle after it burst its rear tyre. The vehicle veered off the road and landed in a gorge injuring all the passengers on board.

All the injured were rushed to Mutawatawa Hospital, however, one Mavis Mutize (53) of Mhosva Village Chief Nyajina, Uzumba died on the way to hospital.

The injured are Panganai Mutize (47) of 6206 Glenview Harare, Shupikai Chirisa (49) of number 6206 Glenview 3 Harare, and Blessing Nzounhenda (37) of Dungunda Village chief Nyajina.

Meanwhile on July 16, 2022, around 9 pm at the 65 km peg Harare-Nyamapanda Road, another fatal accident occurred where one person died and eight others were injured.

It is reported that one Ngonidzashe Nyakuna (42) of 2706 Chinzanga Mutoko was driving his Toyota Hilux double cab towards Nyamapanda with six passengers.

Also, Washington Matanhure (35) of Chidodo village Chief Chipfuyamiti, Uzumba was driving his white Toyota Dyna truck along the same road due West towards Harare with even passengers on board.

It is alleged that on approaching the 65 km peg along the said road, Nyakuna lost control of his vehicle and encroached in the Matanhure’s lane ramming the corner of his vehicle resulting in an intensive side-swipe.

Allegations are that Ngonidzashe Nyakuna sustained severe head injuries and a broken right leg and died on the spot.

The injured were rushed to Murewa hospital where they were attended to and discharged, however, Matanhure is said to be in critical condition in the same hospital.

Police spokesperson for Mashonaland East Province Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi confirmed both accidents and urged drivers to be cautious on the roads.

“Drivers must exercise caution when driving on roads, they should keep their vehicles under control and travel at recommended speed per given area. They should also check the condition of their vehicles before engaging on a journey to ensure they are roadworthy,” he said.
