$60k for Mwenezi storm victims

Government has availed nearly $60 000 to help hundreds of families across Mwenezi, whose homes were recently ravaged by violent winds that left a trail of destruction across the district.

Strong winds swept away roofs from houses, schools and clinics in Mwenezi East and Mwenezi West, forcing the affected families to appeal to Government and development partners for assistance.

Mwenezi District Administrator Ms Rosemany Chingwe yesterday said Government had released $56 000 to assist victims of the violent storms through the Civil Protection Unit.

She said the local CPU was carrying out assessments to determine how much each of the affected families would be paid.

“We have been carrying out assessments over the past few days and we will be done either today (Tuesday) or tomorrow (Wednesday) and we will start paying them either via Ecocash or Real Time Gross Settlement,” she said.

“Government released $56 000 to the local CPU for us to pay the families and we hope the money will go a long way in helping them to rebuild their homes.”

Ms Chingwe said the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society had also chipped in with more than 50 tents and food stuffs.

“We received 56 tents from Zimbabwe Red Cross and basic food stuffs such as sugar which we will also be distributing to the affected families,” she said.

“We are, however, still appealing for bigger tents to provide temporary learning space for school pupils from some schools where classroom roofs were damaged by the devastating winds.”

Ms Chingwe said the situation remained dire at Chingwizi where temporary classrooms and teachers’ houses were in bad shape owing to worn out tents.

Learning activities at Nyuni Primary School and Nyuni Secondary School, together with Tokwe-Mukosi and Chingwizi primary schools, were being affected by worn out tents which were now leaking exposing, learners to the ravages of the weather, particularly during the rainy season.

Mwenezi is prone to natural disasters and last year a rampaging hailstorm left a trail of destruction across the district after ravaging homes and crops.
