VETERAN sports administrator Titus Zvomuya has been appointed as the chef de mission of Team Zimbabwe for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Zvomuya, who has held various top administrative posts in a number of national sport associations including the Zimbabwe Rugby Union and Zimbabwe Cricket, was yesterday elevated to this key position by the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee.

This came after Zvomuya “successfully completed his tour of duty” as the chef de mission of Team Zimbabwe that took part in the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

In a statement yesterday, ZOC said: “ZOC is pleased to announce the appointment of seasoned administrator Titus Itai Zvomuya as chef de mission to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Having successfully completed his tour of duty as chef de mission to the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games, Zvomuya’s appointment was extended to the Summer Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from August 5-21, 2016.

“This recommendation was presented by the ZOC Technical and Development Commissions and upheld in line with a resolution passed by the ZOC Board.

The chef de mission’s main role will be to effectively manage the Zimbabwe Olympic Team before, during and after the Games.

“Zvomuya, a ZOC Board member, is currently the director of the Bindura University of Science Education’s National Sports Academy. He brings with him vast experience in sport governance and management, having lectured and managed sport in tertiary institutions such as the University of Zimbabwe and Chinhoyi University, as well as holding senior administrative posts in the Zimbabwe Rugby Union and Zimbabwe Cricket.”

In being appointed as the chef de mission of Team Zimbabwe for the 2016 Rio Games, Zvomuya joins the “elite club” of fellow top local sports administrators such as Paul Chingoka, Robert Mutsauki, Thabani Gonye and Busi Chindove who also led Team Zimbabwe at the last four Olympic Games in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 respectively.

ZOC also announced that preparations for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games are well on course with athletes, who are earmarked to take part at the world’s biggest sporting showcase, “upping their training in anticipation of qualification events scheduled for 2015”.

“In just over 520 days Team Zimbabwe will take part in the Games of the XXXI Summer Olympiad to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Athletes in various disciplines are upping their training in anticipation of qualification events scheduled for 2015.
