Munyaradzi Doma in Zvishavane
Residents in Zvishavane have accused the local authority of failing to provide clean water, exposing them to water-borne diseases.

They said although the Zvishavane Town Council had committed to have the situation rectified, the residents believe the authorities are not giving the issue the attention it deserves.

Residents who spoke to The Herald last week said though they get regular water supplies, the quality was not good enough.

“We appreciate that at least we are getting water, but the quality is not good enough, it defeats the whole purpose because it is always dirty,” Tanya Zhou said.

She urged the authorities to work hard on making sure that the pipes are clean or deal with the water source.

Another resident added: “Once you pour this water into a container, some brown like substance collects at the bottom.”

“The issue of water quality has left some residents opting to buy water for drinking because surely you cannot consume such dirty water, it’s not healthy.

“People will definitely get sick because of this water. They should do more than just talk of improving the situation,” Takesure Moyo said.

The council has also admitted that the water quality is poor during rainy season, adding that they are working to have that rectified.

“We are providing water to most of the town, but we have been having some challenges in some areas. During the rainy season, the quality of our water leaves a lot to be desired.

“The water is brownish. Water is colourless and it has to be just that. However, the issue of ‘brown water’ is currently being addressed at our water works,” council said in its minutes released recently.

The authorities said they were also re-sanding, sand-washing and placing and replacing of nozzles.

“We hope this will improve the quality if our water during the coming rainy season,” the council said.

Residents, however, hope that the water quality problem will be resolved as some do not feel safe drinking it.
