Zvishavane Town Council has resolved to resuscitate Mabhula Waste Water Treatment Plant at a cost of $200 000 to arrest sewer reticulation problems in the town.

Town secretary Mr Tinoda Mukutu said council planned to replace the old sewer pipes, which could not cope with the growing number of people and led to several sewer bursts in some suburbs.

“We are working on that (flowing sewage), as you know Shabanie was a very small town and it’s growing fast,” he said.

“We have procured 300mm pipes so that we replace the smaller ones installed before, so we are gradually replacing them to make sure that we limit the pipe bursts.”

A recent special full council meeting resolved that the Mabhula Waste Water Treatment Plant be refurbished.

Council is expecting to undertake the project before the end of this year.

The same full council meeting also resolved to procure a honey-sucker truck.

“The major challenge remains that the Mabhula Waste Water Plant is down and we need about $200 000 to $300 000 to resuscitate that and as management and council, we are trying to find a partner,” said Mr Mukutu.

“It’s a low hanging fruit, but we are saying we should find a partner to make sure that the waste water which is pumped doesn’t go into the environment.”

Mr Mukutu said council was working on the modalities for commencement of the project.

Council has already de-sludged other ponds serving the town to reduce the sewer problems.
