ZIMBABWE Republic Police (ZRP) Support Unit last Friday donated groceries and clothes to more than 60 widows and orphans of former police officers. The goods were donated by well-wishers through Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri.

The beneficiaries were drawn from the country’s 10 provinces.

Speaking at a handover ceremony at the ZRP Support Unit headquarters in Harare, ZRP Officer Commanding Support Unit Senior Assistant Commissioner Angeline Guvamombe said the donations would go a long way in assisting the widows and their children.

“This unequalled gesture of goodwill in assisting the needy both within and outside the organisation is a clear testimony of the benefactors’ resolve to assist the needy.

“This generosity of spirit should not be viewed as a mere donation but, most importantly, those who donated these goods have assumed the social responsibility of serving livelihoods. The goods that have been mobilised here may not be enough to cater for a person’s everyday needs but what is of utmost importance is the significance of the donation,” she said.

Snr Asst Comm Guvamombe said caring for orphans and widows was a command from God that should be fulfilled and engraved in everyone’s mind.

“Caring for those in distress is therefore not optional for all followers of Christ,” she said.

“It is a calling that must be heeded by all mankind to bring smiles on the faces of the underprivileged.”

ZRP provincial chaplain Superintendent Evas Madaza said most of the widows and orphans needed a helping hand.

“In this view, the organisation through its enlightened leadership, the Commissioner-General of Police Augustine Chihuri in particular, has expressed his open-handedness as he tries to assist those facing various challenges by giving them that he can afford,” he said.
