The Chivi Rural District Council chairperson and Zimbabwe Amalgamated Housing Association (ZAHA) director-general, Dr Killer Zivhu, yesterday donated goods worth $10 000 to an orphanage in Kuwadzana, Harare, and pledged to pay school fees for all the orphans at the institution. He also pledged to buy school uniforms for the 37 orphans housed at Tamuka Foundation orphanage.

Two of the orphans begin their tertiary education at Midlands State University in August while another two are at Seke Teachers’ College with one studying at Harare Polytechnic.

Dr Zivhu, who is known for his philanthropic work, said he was touched by the plight of the children after he saw the story being broadcast on national television. “I grew up as an orphan being raised by my grandmother and people used to ridicule me because of that.

“To be an orphan is not a curse. Orphans deserve to be fed and to have shelter like every other human being,” he said. Dr Zivhu then appealed to Government for land to build a better orphanage for the children.

This, he said, would improve the lives of the orphans, who are sharing only one house as their residence. The orphanage started in 2001 and looks after children who were once living on the streets, babies dumped at birth as well as children living with HIV and Aids.

“I am pleading with Government to give us more land to build a better orphanage for this organisation. “If we get a farm, we want to produce surplus food that we will give out to other orphanages as well.”

Tamuka Foundation owner Mrs Veronia Kwati said she was grateful to Dr Zivhu’s gesture of assisting them in their time of need. “As the guardian, I did not know where to start.

“We did not have money to pay tuition for the children we look after as well as provide enough food for them,” she said.
