ZIMBABWE moved into second place on nine points after the morning foursomes on day two of the Africa Zone VI Golf Championships at Devonvale Golf and Wine Estate in Stellenbosch on Tuesday.
Christian Mbanga and Visitor Mapwanya beat Lesotho 5-3 as Jack Allard and Stuart Krogg held off Uganda’s top combination to win 2-up while Travis Smith and Pride Sembo rallied with a 4- 3 result against Kenya.

Tonderai Masunga and Clive Nguru claimed the team’s fourth point when they beat Zambia 2-1.

Namibia won three games as Kenya slipped from second in the first round after winning just one game in the foursomes.

The two countries were joined by Mauritius and Swaziland in third place on 7.5 points

Defending champions South Africa are still leading after they secured 12 points after the first two rounds.

Meanwhile, Nguru is leading the rankings for the Windhoek Lager Africa Jacket Golf Championships in the A Division after the players took part in three events so far.

The tournament’s final round is set for May 2-4 and Nguru, who is currently with the national team at the Zone VI, is leading the pack.

The Windhoek Lager Africa Jacket tournaments have been played throughout the country since their launch in November 2013 and so far the players took part in the Leopard Rock Open, the Hwange Open, MAWEGU Amateurs and the Dugmore Trophy.

The Hwange Open had the largest field of 122 players.

Nguru is leading the race on 84 points after he took home 32 in MAWEGU, 20 at Dugmore and 32 Leopard Rock.

Stuart Krog is second on 79 points with national team captain Mbanga third on 69.

Tonderai Masunga and Jack Allard completes the top five.

Brian Maphosa the Championships Liaison person said the circuit had achieved one of its goals.

“Being the first such tournament, there has been a lot of learning. After the tournament in Zvishavane and the finals in Windhoek, we will re-strategise to enhance the profile of the tournament,” said Maphosa.
