CHITTAGONG. – Zimbabwe failed to register what would have been a morale-boosting first win on tour, even as they switched to coloured clothing, falling short by 88 runs against the Bangladesh Cricket Board XI. After winning the toss in the one-day warm-up match at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong yesterday, the visitors put the BCB XI in to bat first and seamer Neville Madziva struck twice inside the mandatory power play to remove opener Anamul Haque for 13 and Rony Talukdar for two.

Partnerships then mushroomed throughout the BCB XI’s innings, aided by the waywardness of Zimbabwe’s bowlers who bowled a total of 15 wides and two no-balls in the innings, meaning no pressure was exerted on the hosts for any length period of time.

Shamsur Rahman eased to 49 before he was trapped in front by John Nyumbu and Nasir Hossain top-scored with a run-a-ball knock of 61 as the BCB XI accelerated towards the end to finish on 282 runs.

For Zimbabwe, sixth-choice bowler Vusimuzi Sibanda had the best figures on display, claiming four wickets for 44 runs in seven overs.
Nyumbu was also tidy, picking up two wickets for 40 runs in his 10 overs.

Chasing, Zimbabwe elevated Brendan Taylor to open the innings with the in-form Regis Chakabva, in a bid to give the Test captain much needed time in the middle.

The opening stand put on 40 runs before Chakabva went for 14, off the bowling of seamer Mohammad Shahid.
Taylor followed soon after with the score on 55, for a laboured 28 runs off 49 balls.

Sikandar Raza Butt then partnered with Timycen Maruma for the third-wicket and the two put on 77 runs.
That made sure the asking rate was still in check. Raza, in particular, continued in his accustomed aggressive instinct to race to 44 off 43 balls before being dismissed by Sabbir Rahman’s leg spin.

Maruma followed soon after for a patient half-century, his 50 being the highest score of the innings, but he failed to kick on.
A middle order collapse then ensued as Sibanda (5), Peter John Moor (0) Solomon Mire (4) and Neville Madziva (1) failed to ignite some impetus into the innings.

Richmond Mutumbami (22) and Shingirai Masakadza (15) tried to resurrect the innings towards the end, but by then the asking rate had sky-rocketed and they both fell trying to go for the big shots.

For the BCB XI, none of their bowlers stood out as wickets were shared, but they complemented each other well with their discipline and with runs up, scoreboard pressure did most of the work for them.

The first of five ODI matches starts tomorrow, and the selectors are faced with the big task of picking the right combinations.
