TEAM Zimbabwe have won the ninth edition of the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation Games athletics trophy after scooping 49 medals – 13 gold, 19 silver and 17 bronze. Zimbabwe have so far accumulated 139 points during the Games while Namibia have 128, Tanzania 44, South Africa and Swaziland 37, Angola five, Mauritius three and Lesotho two.

No points have so far been recorded by DRC, Malawi and Mozam- bique.

Zimbabwe last won the athletics trophy in Malawi in 2009 and DRC in 2011.

During the Sarpcco Games in 2013, the trophy was won by Namibia.

Meanwhile, during the cross-country events held yesterday, one of Zimbabwe’s top female middle-distance runners, Olivia Chitate, scooped a gold medal while in the team event Chitate, Ethal Sibanda and Constance Nyasango won a silver.

In the men’s event, Elijah Mabhunu, Isaac Mpofu, Trust Chidomaya and Munyaradzi Jari scooped a silver medal.

The Zimbabwe Sarpcco Games athletics manager, Abigail Moyo, said the force had a strong team and that is why they managed to win the trophy.

“Our team was very strong but it was an uphill task for us to win the athletics trophy. It was not easy because Namibia and Swaziland had very strong teams in the track events.

“So it was really hard, but our guys did their best,” she said.

She said it was also through hard work, dedication and teamwork that managed them to win the trophy.

“It was also through teamwork because we managed to get points from every event with the exception of the 100m men, 200m men and 400m men,” she said.

Yesterday, the Zimbabwe men’s volleyball team overcame Namibia 3-0 and will now face Swaziland in the semi-finals while in netball Zimbabwe beat Malawi 43-38. The team later played against and outplayed the host team 61-48.

In football, the Zimbabwe women’s team edged out South Africa 2-1 to progress to the finals and will play against the DRC.
