The Zimbabwe Debate team has left for Singapore where they will be battling it out for honours in the World School Debating Championship (WSDC) 2015. The tournament will see teams from 53 countries around the globe competing for the coveted title of champions of the WSDC. According to organisers the tourney will see students being tested in their excellence in debating, international understanding and freedom of speech.

“All debates will take place in English and each country should send not more than five participants to debate on social, moral and political issues,” read some of the rules.

The Zimbabwean delegation comprised of four students from Usher High School and Mtshabezi High School of Bulawayo, three Upper Sixth, and one in Form Four.

The IQ students are Zibusiso Ndlovu, Charming Chabuka-Dube Lompophoma Khumalo and Kundai Nobelo who emerged as the best students of the tournament when it was held at the preliminary levels in Zimbabwe.

In an interview with Cool Lifestyle before they left for the tourney, the excited participants said they were confident they would bring the trophy home.

“It is an honour to represent Zimbabwe in Singapore and we are the first team to be participating in the World School Debating Championship.

“This is a very big achievement for us, we pray and hope this year we bring the trophy home,” said Kundai Nobela who is the team leader.

Nobela said that they cannot promise to win or to lose but will represent Zimbabwe well in the championship tournament.

As a first for the country, she said they have done much research on the desired topics.

“I would like to thank our teachers for giving us much information and research, we promise not to let them down let alone the country. We hope to do the best,” said Nobela.

Youngest of the all, Lompophoma Khumalo – a Form Four student – said she will use the opportunity to develop her education.

“The greatness of the competition is not about what we are going to do, see, or enjoy but what we are going to bring home and how we are going to inspire others and show them how far talent can take you. We are the gongs of Zimbabwe so they should see Zimbabwe in us.

“I am happy to say that we will also use the opportunity to market our country well,” said the jovial Lompophoma.

The World Schools Debating Championships is a truly global competition for high school debaters which take place each year in a different country, hosted by a national debating body. Past venues that the tournament has been held include Peru, Qatar, Seoul, Athens, Cape Town, Turkey and Bangkok, Thailand in 2014.
