ZIMBABWE’S amateur golf team left the country for Kenya yesterday where they will take part in the Africa Amateur Golf Teams Championship starting on Monday.

The players on duty include Royal Harare golfer Tonderai Masunga, who was a non-travelling reserve until he replaced Kieran Vincent.

Masunga will have Visitor Mapwanya, Robson Chinhoi and David Amm as his teammates.

Zimbabwe will be among 16 other African nations which will tee off in the four-day tournament at Limuru Country Club.

The local players have been training at Chapman ahead of the eighth edition of the African Amateur Golf Teams Championships.

Vincent withdrew from the team due to academic commitments.

Masunga will be making his debut at the championships.

The Zimbabwean team will be led by veteran coach Roger Baylis and ZGA first vice-president Mufaro Chivonivoni.

Zimbabwe will also take the opportunity to bid to host 2017 Africa Amateur Golf Teams Championships during the event.

South Africa, Tanzania, Swaziland, Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Ethiopia, Cote d’Ivoire, Zambia, Mauritius, Egypt, Rwanda, Botswana, Namibia and Uganda are some of the countries that are taking part in the championships.

The championships will feature four rounds of stroke play.

Each team consists of four players but only the best three scores per round will count toward the team total.

The country with the lowest gross score at the end of the championships will be crowned champions while there is also a prize for the overall individual winner.

Meanwhile, the Moses Chunga Golf Tournament was held at Warren Hills yesterday with over 30 players taking part.

The golf tournament was meant to raise funds for various projects being undertaken by the Zimbabwe football legend.
