Zifa targets Rahman Gumbo

The country’s supreme football body is still nursing a severely battered image from a futile and controversial attempt to appoint Belgian Tom Saintfiet as Warriors head coach.
The Zifa board is set to meet today (Friday) in Harare to deliberate on the appointment of a new Warrior’s coach after the Department of Immigration denied the Belgian a work permit.

Although several names, including Charles Mhlauri’, have been linked with the Warriors job following Saintfiet’s failure to get a work permit, a well-placed source within Zifa confided in Post Sport that several board members are convinced that Gumbo is equal to the task at hand.

“Although it has not been made official simply because we still have to discuss the issue as a board, most board members have suggested Rahman Gumbo to take over from Saintfiet. Of course, other names have been put forward including (Charles) Mhlauri and (Sunday) Chidzambwa but it seems as if Gumbo’s name featured prominently,” he said.

When contacted for confirmation, Zifa board first vice president, Ndumiso Gumede, neither denied nor confirmed that Gumbo’s name featured prominently among the board members.
“We cannot confirm at this moment the identity of the person we are going to engage as Warrior’s head coach.
The fact is that we are going to meet on Friday (today) to deliberate on those issues.” said Gumbo
