ZIFA admit Mapeza is intelligent, has potential, but…

Mapeza, whose resignation letter is yet to formally reach the Cuthbert Dube led board, was one of the national teams’ coaches inherited from the previous board.

For continuity’s sake he was retained, a board member has said.
Speaking at a Sportswriters Association of Zimbabwe (Central Region Chapter) organised stakeholders meeting held at a Gweru hotel on Wednesday, Benedict Moyo, the board member responsible for competitions and national teams said they had only read of Mapeza’s resignation in the media.

“I have only heard through the (news)papers that Norman Mapeza has resigned. The board is yet to get formal communication. If indeed he has resigned it is quite unfortunate. We had a plan to develop him. If he has not resigned, we still have a plan for him.
“He should come through the mill. There are no shortcuts and appointment must be based on merit. I am one of the chief instructors when it comes to coaching, he should be qualified. We still have a programme even if he is not part of the system. We will continue to push the programme through. Admittedly he is intelligent and has the potential.
“I would like to underscore that the current board did not appoint Norman as the Under- 23 national coach. We inherited a national team structure from the previous board in which Norman was part of the structure as acting coach and Under-23 coach despite not having the required coach qualifications,” said Moyo.
