The Zimbabwe Congress of Student Unions (ZICOSU) has distanced itself from statements made by a group of unscrupulous students attacking President Mugabe, In a statement last Friday, ZICOSU president Cde Takudzwa Gambiza said the student body was currently seized with preparations for the forthcoming Students Interface with President Mugabe. A group of non-union members on Wednesday issued a statement attacking President Mugabe.

“As ZICOSU, we categorically distance ourselves from the undesirable statement made on our behalf by non-union members who lack both the authority and mandate to issue such statements on behalf of the students board. The statement referred herein was made by a self-proclaimed ZICOSU secretary-general who denigrated the President, during a press conference held on the 8th of November 2017. It is regrettable that some individuals, in an act of mischief, violated our code of conduct by speaking on behalf of the union without relevant authority and they went further to disrespect our Chancellor and patron, His Excellency the President Cde R. G. Mugabe in the name of union.” Cde Gambiza dismissed the incident as “uncouth” saying the union would take appropriate action to protect union’s name.

He said all ZICOSU communications are done through his office or through the information department represented by Cde Munashe Mupoperi and Cde Sympathy Pasipanodya. The Zimbabwe Congress of Students’ Unions is a progressive students’ body that has immensely thrived on discipline as its fundamental values.

“As such, the union wishes to vehemently disassociate itself from the culprits that denigrated the person of the President and Chancellor. ZICOSU is therefore currently seized with preparations of the upcoming Students Interface with the President and Chancellor Cde R. G. Mugabe. The union wishes to fully bring forth all the relevant students’ concerns to the full attention of the President as we move towards the event.”
