The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has printed 475 800 ballot papers for the 16 by-elections to be held tomorrow. New ZEC chief elections officer, Mrs Constance Chigwamba, confirmed the number of ballots printed in a statement yesterday.

“Fidelity Printers and Refiners was given the mandate to print the ballot papers to be used in the by-elections and a total of 475 800 ballot papers have been printed,” she said.

According to the schedule in Bulawayo province, Lobengula constituency has been allocated 27 000 ballots, Luveve 29 800, Makokoba, 30 300, Pelandaba-Mpopoma and Pumula 28 100, respectively.

In Harare, Dzivarasekwa has 26 200, Harare East 37 900, Highfield West 24 500, Kuwadzana, 26 100, Kambuzuma 25 500 and Glen View South 27 300.

In Manicaland, Headlands was allocated 33 300 and Dangamvura-Chikanga 43 100.

In Mashonaland West, Hurungwe West has been given 29 000 ballots while Tsholotsho North in Matabeleland North has 31 900 ballots.

In Midlands, Kwekwe constituency has 27 700. The 16 seats fell vacant following the recall of legislators from Zanu-PF and the MDC-T respectively.

Fourteen of the seats fell vacant after the MDC-T expelled 21 legislators that had left the party to form the MDC Renewal Team.

The by-elections will see Zanu-PF being challenged by independent candidates and others from parties like NCA, Zapu and Transform Zimbabwe, among others.

The major opposition has boycotted the polls as part of its much criticised policy not to take part in any elections until their demands for so-called electoral reforms are met.

The by-elections offer Zanu-PF an opportunity to further strengthen its parliamentary majority.
