The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has complied with the Electoral Court ruling reinstating Cde Terence Mukupe as the zanu-pf candidate for Harare East for the June 10 by-election.

A statement released by Zec on Thursday showed Cde Mukupe as the sole candidate for the ruling party in the constituency, an indication that Cde Mavis Gumbo, who had been nominated at the last minute, had withdrawn her candidature.

“It is hereby notified, for general information that following the judgement handed down on 6th May, 2015 by the Electoral Court Case Number EC/02/15, Terence Mukupe has been retained as the zanu-pf candidate to run in the Harare East National Assembly by-election scheduled for 10th June, 2015,” acting Chief Elections Officer Mr Utloile Silaigwana said.

He said four candidates will battle it out in the by-election and these are, Cde Mukupe, Dale Dore of Transform Zimbabwe, Marvelous Kuveya and Misheck Mushwatuh, who are both independents.

Cde Mukupe was last week endorsed by the zanu-pf Politburo after Electoral Court judge Justice Chinembiri Bhunu ruled that both Cdes Mukupe and Gumbo had submitted their papers procedurally when the nomination court sat.

Cde Mukupe had beaten Cde Gumbo in the zanu-pf primaries, but the Harare provincial executive blocked his candidature arguing that he had no track record in the party.

Cde Mukupe successfully filed his papers with the Nomination Court, but before the end of day, Cde Gumbo was authorised by the Harare provincial leadership to file hers.
