THE Zanu-PF Youth League yesterday elected its representatives in the Central Committee across the party’s 10 provinces ahead of the wing’s conference which runs from next Thursday to Sunday.
Each province elected four candidates for each of the organ’s posts and these will contest executive positions at conference.
The youth conference is scheduled for Harare from August from Thursday this week to Sunday.

In Manicaland, the youth wing threw its weight behind Makoni West Member of the National Assembly Cde Kudzanai Chipanga to takeover the seat of deputy national secretary for youth affairs.

Cde Chipanga, together with Cdes Betty Kudzai Dhliwayo, Lovemore Chibvura and Admire Mahachi were elected to take up the four Central Committee seats reserved for youths in Manicaland.

The elections were held at Mutare Hall. Cde Chipanga polled 241 votes, while Cde Dhliwayo scooped the other slot after amassing 180 votes. Cdes Chibvura and Mahachi had 76 and 63 votes respectively.  The incident-free elections were presided over by Retired Lieutenant-General Mike Nyambuya and Cde Judith Mawire.
Zanu-PF Manicaland provincial youth chairman Cde Kelvin Manyengavana hailed the youths for their discipline during the elective process.

“Our wish as Manicaland is to have Cde Chipanga as the deputy national youth secretary. Yes, we have had our elections and you voted for the candidates of your choice, but I want to urge you to be united and vote for our candidate Cde Chipanga for the deputy national youth secretary. We should be united and speak with one voice,” he said.

Speaking at the same occasion, Zanu-PF Manicaland provincial chairman, Ambassador John Shumba Mvundura, said all the other party wings should take a leaf from the youths who managed to conduct their elections in the most disciplined way.

“Youths, you have shown everyone that indeed you are the vanguard of the party. Your high levels of discipline should be commended. I have received reports from all the eight districts and everyone gave your elections a clean bill.

“All those elected into office should not sit on their laurels, but work for the party. Those who elected you into office look forward to you to deliver and work for the good of the party,” he said.

Ambassador Mvundura urged members to be wary of some people using their financial and material muscle to buy votes.
“In the past we used to know youths as the watchdogs, but of late you are proving to be compromised by wining and dining with those using resources to buy positions in the party. Please name and shame all those approaching you with goodies and other resources to buy your votes.

“As leaders, we should aim at leaving behind a good legacy where everyone will speak highly of your positive contributions to the party. History should not judge you as one person who contributed to the demise of the party through your selfishness. Rumour-mongering and back-stabbing has no room in Zanu-PF because some people thrive on that to create chaos and confusion in our revolutionary party,” said Ambassador Mvundura.

In Masvingo, Cde Yeukai Simbanegavi landed a position in the Central Committee unopposed (Women’s quota). Also elected were Cdes Martin Zinyoro, Kudakwashe Gopo and Cleopas Magwizi.

Zanu PF Masvingo provincial chairman Rtd Brigadier General Callisto Gwanetsa, who was among party leaders who observed the elections, said he was happy with the peaceful conduct of the polls. “We are very happy that the process went on quite well with no disturbances. This is a sign that our youths are disciplined,’’ he said.
In Harare provincial chairman Cde Amos Midzi said the elections went well.

“All went according to plan and it was very peaceful. We have since submitted names of prospective candidates to the national election council,” he said.
Names of those elected could not be immediately established.

In the Midlands province, the elections were peaceful.
Cdes Louis Matutu, Cde Anastancia Ndlovu, Eramus Jaya and Thokozani Mpofu were elected to represent the youths in the province. Cde Makhosini Hlongwane confirmed the results.

“We had a Midlands Youth Provincial congress where they were electing candidates to represent the province in the national youth conference to be held in Harare. There were five candidates out of which four were required to fill in four reserved posts for the province in the national youth executive. Only one post was contested which is the second candidate where Cde Ndlovu and Cde Dziva were battling it out. Cde Ndlovu won. The other three were uncontested,” he said. In Bulawayo, the elections were also peaceful with Cde Mpehlabayo Malinga and Cde Butholezwe Ngwenya elected unopposed into the national executive.

Cde Myra Ngozo was also elected unopposed into the youth league’s central committee.
Cde Sibongile Sibanda was elected after beating her rival Cde Anna Makgohloa by 70 to 40 votes.

Addressing the youths after the elections, Zanu-PF provincial chairman Dr Calistus Ndlovu congratulated the winners and urged them to work for the interest of the people.

“We are done with electing members from the youth league that will represent the province in the national executive and central committee. We have all worked and I would like to congratulate those that have been elected and those that voted,” he said.

“To those elected, you are there to serve the interest of the people not your own personal interests. Your election means you have been selected to work with the people and as you are the future leaders you have to be highly dignified,” he said. “I am glad that the election was peaceful and we hope that those elected will work well with us and as a province as we don’t discriminate people.”

Zanu-PF politburo member Dr Sikhanyiso Ndlovu observed the election. Matabeleland South voted on Saturday and Cdes Eveline Mpofu, Nkosinomusa Langa, Leslie Ncube and Fuluselo Muleya emerged as the four candidates who will represent the province. Matabeleland North province was supposed to hold its provincial conference yesterday in Lupane where four candidates for the national conference were also expected to be elected.

The leadership could not be reached for the results yesterday.
In Mashonaland West, the elections were still underway by time of going to print.
