Zanu-PF’s election directorate yesterday approved candidates seeking to stand for various positions at the party’s Youth League conference to be held next month.
A few others were disqualified after failing to meet the party’s rules and regulations.Zanu-PF spokesperson Cde Rugare Gumbo said in an interview that names of the approved candidates would be announced after tomorrow’s  Politburo meeting.

“We have approved names from most of the provinces,” he said. “I cannot give the names of the approved candidates now because they are yet to be approved by the Politburo which is meeting on Wednesday (tomorrow).

“Masvingo will have its provincial coordinating committee meeting on Thursday and elections will be done Saturday.  We have disqualified a few candidates who largely failed to meet the party’s guidelines because we are religiously following the rules and regulations.”

Cde Gumbo said the Election Directorate’s decisions were largely informed by the recommendations from the provinces.

Those who were disqualified, Cde Gumbo said failed to meet the five years criteria in the provincial structures. “Some of them never participated in the province and others who have been there did not have enough years to qualify as candidates,” he said.

Meanwhile, preparations for the youth conference are now at an advanced stage

The conference is set for between August 7 and 10 and would precede the Women’s League conference that would be held later in the month.

Both conferences are precursors to the main Zanu-PF National People’s Congress that will be held in December.

Zanu-PF Secretary for Youth Cde Absolom Sikhosana told The Herald on Friday that each province would have to come up with four representatives from their respective zones.

He said the four names who will be nominated would be submitted to an inter-district level that would be convened next week.

The idea, said Cde Sikhosana, was to have representation of all provinces at national level .

He said the four nominees from each province would constitute an electoral college that would elect people for senior positions such as deputy secretary for the Youth League, who would become a Politburo member.

The office of deputy secretary held by Cde Edison Chakanyuka is the most coveted position in the Youth League.
