THE Zanu-PF Women’s League national executive met in Harare on Monday and discussed preparations for the league’s annual national conference to be held in August this year. The conference is the first national event by the women’s movement since Zanu-PF’s landslide victory in the July 31, 2013 harmonised elections.

Zanu-PF Women’s League secretary Cde Oppah Muchinguri called on members recently elected into provincial structures to work hard.
“To the new leadership that we now have in the Women’s League, our aim and objective is to mobilise the women of Zimbabwe in support of the party. We have to ensure that people come to Zanu-PF in their numbers through recognising a well defined leadership,” Cde Muchinguri said.

“We have to lead by example and make sure that the interest of the people that are enshrined in the new national Constitution are realised, that is defend and promote women’s rights through removing customs and attitudes that suppress them politically, economically and socially.”

She urged the new leadership to play a collective role in condemning gender-based violence and ensure restoration of the country’s cultural heritage through ending practices that infringe women and children’s rights.

Cde Muchinguri said there was need to foster solidarity with other progressive women’s organisations and groups locally and internationally.

Women’s parliamentary caucus chairperson Cde Monica Mutsvangwa weighed in saying: “In English they say you do not re-invent the wheel and that is why we do exchange programmes where we go and see how other women operate.

“We go to other countries and see how the women from Frelimo (Mozambique), ANC (South Africa) and Swapo (Namibia) do their work,” she said.

“We are going to invite all these women from other countries for our conference because that is when we get to realise where we do it right and where we fall short and then that way we can progress as the Women’s League.”

Cde Mutsvangwa said the conference would celebrate what women voted for in last year’s elections.
“We are going to congratulate all the women who went to vote for their party. The conference is going to talk to people of all ages and different professionals since politics is for everyone”, she said.

Meanwhile, ZANU-PF Mashonaland West will this weekend hold its fourth provincial co-ordinating committee meeting, where national executive members are expected to make presentations on the clusters contained in the Zim-Asset economic blueprint.

Presentations would centre on the role the party is expected to play in each of the clusters to bring about better understanding of policies and solutions to problems like the state of roads.

Among those slated to make presentations are Finance and Economic Development Minister Patrick Chinamasa and Energy and Power Development Minister Dzikamai Mavhaire, who is also Zanu-PF national secretary for production and labour.

Secretary for indigenisation and economic Empowerment Cde Saviour Kasukuwere would speak on the party’s role in implementation of policies falling under his portfolio.

Party national secretary for transport and welfare Cde Nicholas Goche would also address the meeting; while national chairman Cde Simon Khaya Moyo is expected to deliver the keynote address.

Mashonaland West provincial chairman Cde Temba Mliswa said all was in place to successfully host the conference in Chinhoyi on Saturday.
