Zanu-PF organs have welcomed President Mugabe’s call for unity saying divisions can only destroy the party. President Mugabe emphasised the need for unity in the party when he addressed multitudes of people from the country’s 10 provinces in Harare on Wednesday after the Million Man March.

Youth League deputy secretary, Cde Kudzanai Chipanga said it was important for the party to unite and shun divisive tendencies.

He said they welcomed President Mugabe’s message because that was what Zanu-PF should be about.

“As Youth League, we will continue with party programmes to campaign for the party, to revive the support base for the party and to promote unity in Zanu-PF,” he said.

“We cannot afford to have further divisions in the party. We can have those divisions at our own peril. We need to unite or we perish as a party. So all the wings of the party need to unite.”

Zanu-PF Women’s League political commissar, Cde Mabel Chinomona said the President has always advocated unity in the party.

She implored other organs of the party to carry the message and follow what the President said.

“That is the message that we really wanted,” she said.

“The President is a leader who wants the people he leads to be united so that he can deliver on his mandate.

“Now all party cadres must embrace that message and express it wherever they are.

“As the Women’s League political commissar, I say we are happy and we want our league, the Youth League and other organs to unite people not to be used by anyone to divide the people because it does not serve the party any good.

Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association spokesperson Cde Douglas Mahiya said it was important for everyone associated with the revolutionary party to promote unity than divisions.

“We agree with what President Mugabe said about the need for us to work together for the unity of the party, Government and the generality of Zimbabweans.

“But what we want is for everyone in the party to demonstrate this message through words and deeds even at rallies.

He stressed that people should desist from preaching divisive messages when addressing rallies and should refrain from denigrating and disregarding war veterans.

“We want to thank the First Lady for recognising war veterans when she addressed the gathering. She truly represented that motherly figure and we felt like her children.

“What you should know is that we were with her late brother Reward Marufu during the liberation struggle fighting to liberate this country. So naturally, we expect that kind of respect and recognition she demonstrated,” said Cde Mahiya.

He said it was equally important for the ruling party to focus on issues that affect the generality of Zimbabweans, among them curbing corruption in Government, to arrest the economic decline and create employment.

By achieving these, Cde Mahiya said, the party would have lived to its expectations.
