From George Maponga in Masvingo—
The Zanu-PF Masvingo provincial coordinating committee has tasked a team of ruling party heavyweights to spearhead mobilisation of donations for the Annual National People’s Conference to be hosted by the province in December. Dates for the annual indaba are still to be announced, but the ruling party’s decision-making body has already endorsed Masvingo Showgrounds as the venue for the conference.

The ruling party in Masvingo has set a target to raise US$50 000 and about 50 beasts for the conference that is expected to draw over 5 000 delegates from across the country and beyond. At least 10 sub-committees were set up to prepare for the conference with mobilisation of the needed resources.

Zanu-PF Masvingo acting provincial chairman Cde Amasa Nhenjana yesterday said a team comprising heavyweights in the province led by Politburo member Cde Josaya Hungwe and Zimbabwe Chiefs’ Council president Chief Fortune Charumbira had been set up to lead the mobilisation of donations.

Other senior leaders are former Masvingo resident ministers Cdes Willard Chiwewe and Titus Maluleke together with former Chivi Central Member of Parliament Cde Paul Mangwana, who is also a member of the Politburo.

“We tasked the senior leadership of the party led by Cde (Josaya) Hungwe and Chief (Fortune) Charumbira to approach companies and eminent individuals in the province so that they can assist us both materially and financially with donations to enable us to host the conference in December,’’ he said.

Cde Nhenjana said Masvingo wanted to host the best ever Zanu-PF conferences, adding the prevailing unity in the ruling party in the province would make it possible to have a successful indaba. Besides pledges of beasts from individuals, each of the seven administrative districts in Masvingo had been tasked to donate five beasts to feed delegates.

The Finance sub-committee led by provincial secretary for finance and Chivi Rural District Council chairman Cde Killer Zivhu has already hit the ground running, mobilising donations from the party’s traditional benefactors and individuals in the province.

Cde Hungwe expressed confidence that Cde Zivhu and his team would meet the set target of funds and beasts for the conference.

“I have full confidence that with Cde Zivhu leading the finance sub-committee to mobilise both material and financial resources for our conference, we will be able to achieve our targets. Cde Zivhu is a man with a proven track record of making things happen. He is a blessing to the people of Masvingo and I am sure that we will meet the targets,’’ said Cde Hungwe.

Masvingo was chosen to host this year’s Zanu-PF annual conference after successfully hosting the 21st February Movement celebrations at the Great Zimbabwe monuments in February. The celebrations — held every year to commemorate President Mugabe’s birthday — were billed as the largest ever judging by the capacity crowd that descended at the World Heritage site.
