Zanu-PF has nominated Cde Caroline Tsitsi Mugabe to the Zvimba Constituency Senate seat in Mashonaland West that fell vacant following the death of Zanu-PF Central Committee member Cde Virginia Muchenje last year. In a notice published in the Government Gazette yesterday, Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chairperson Justice Rita Makarau said the nomination of Cde Mugabe was in accordance with Section 39 (6) of the Electoral Act Chapter 2:13.

“It is hereby notified in terms of Section 39 (6) of the Electoral Act (Chapter 2:13), that the Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front (Zanu-PF) party has nominated Caroline Tsitsi Mugabe, a registered voter in Ward 19 of Zvimba Rural District Council of Ngomahuru Farm, Banket, to fill the vacancy in the Senate that occurred following the death of the incumbent member of the Senate Virginia Muchenje,” the gazette read.

Justice Makarau said any objections to the nomination were open.

“Any voter wishing to object to the nomination of Caroline Tsitsi Mugabe may, in writing, lodge such an objection with the Chief Elections Officer at Mahachi Quantum Building, corner Kaguvi Street and Jason Moyo Avenue Harare, or post them to Private Bag 7782 Causeway within 14 days from the date of publication of this notice setting forth the reasons for the objection,” she said

No by-elections are held to replace Senators as they were chosen under proportional representation and the political party that holds the seat is expected to provide a replacement.
