Rising Afro Jazz artist Prince Musarurwa and 13-year-old Tendai Mavengeni over the weekend rocked Book Café when they gave a sterling performance that was complemented by quality sound.
Dubbed, “The Afro Summer Show” the gig brought mbira lovers together to enjoy music from the country’s young talent.
It was the pair’s well-choreographed act that left the fans dazzled.

Young Tendai was the first to take to the stage and gave fans a good act when she belted tune after tune from her latest offering.
Revellers took to the dance floor, singing along to the tunes.

When she did the crowd’s favourite, “Chamutengure”, Musarurwa joined her on stage and together they personified a musical match made in heaven.
She ended her performance with the song “Wakaronga”.

“On this song, I was inspired by a brawl that ensued at a funeral when relatives accused each other for the death of a family member,” she explained on stage.
Musarurwa also gave a scintillating performance belting hits from his album ‘Gogodera’ and it was when he sang Pah Chihera’s “Runonzi Rudo” that the crowd went into a frenzy and those who had come with their spouses were seen dancing together and singing along. During the performace, Musarurwa said his inspiration was Oliver Mtukudzi and he played one of Tuku’s hits “Perekedza Mwana”.

“It is because of baba Mtukudzi that I am a musician today, he inspired me and has always dreamt of being like him in terms of music,” he said.
The major highlight of the show was when Musarurwa was joined by a dance group, Flip Floppers from Glen View who gave an account of themselves through a dance beyond the imagination of many.

The show which was supposed to end at 5pm ended around 6.30pm as the crowd kept asking for more and it ended with a collaboration of the two on one of Tendai’s songs “Taimboreva”.
