An amateur video recording of a woman being humiliated through being undressed and made to display her private parts by several other women, which went viral last week, has caught the attention of the police.

Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said yesterday that police were looking for the women who abused the victim.

She appealed to anyone with information that might help arrest the culprits to come forward at any police station.

“We are appealing to anyone with information which may lead to the identification of suspects in a video which has gone viral on the social media platform,” she said. “Some unruly female hooligans are being shown torturing and indecently exposing and impinging on a certain woman’s body.

“The women are shouting all sorts of abusive and obscene language whilst celebrating the callous act. This heart-rending video footage is deplorable and unacceptable.”

Snr Asst Comm Charamba urged the victim to come forward and report at any police station.

“Meanwhile, police are warning the suspects, who are obviously an embarrassment to society, that the long arm of the law will definitely catch up with them,” she said.

“While the nation is fighting to empower society and ensure equal rights for all, there are some who are abusing this noble campaign to trample on the rights of others.”

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said members of the public with information on the disturbing video should contact the National Complaints Desk on telephone number (04) 703631 or any nearest police station.

In the video, the abusers can be heard insinuating that their victim had snatched someone’s husband in the neighbourhood.

Last week, a Harare magistrate sentenced two touts who indecently assaulted a woman at Simon Vengai Muzenda (formerly Fourth Street) bus rank in the city last year to an effective eight months in prison each.

The criminals were caught after police launched a hunt after a video recording of the incident went viral on social media.
