Aids remains one of the killer diseases in Zimbabwe with many people succumbing to the disease each year. It is against this background that local musicians have joined hands and launched an HIV and AIDS awareness theme song for the coming World Aids Day to be commemorated in Victoria Falls on December 1.

The theme song was launched by the National Aids Council in conjunction with African Union at an vent that saw the unveiling of the 2014 World Aids Day logo.

Celebrated poet Albert Nyathi, Dereck Mpofu, Tererai Mugwadi, Adiona Maboreke-Chidzonga and Pauline Gundidza are among musicians who featured on the song.

Mpofu said the song pays tribute to people who are living with AIDS and also reminds people to practise safe sex and to prevent parent to child transmission.
“The reason we came up with this song is because we want people to know that Aids is still claiming people to date and the disease must be taken seriously.

“I think HIV/AIDS is best delivered using popular culture and artful propaganda and that’s why we did two songs with one message by different tempos,” Mpofu said.

“Artistes, just like other people, have a role to play through music to let other people know how deadly some of these diseases like Aids are supposed to be handled.

“It is a song about empathy,” said Nyathi.
Nyathi said the video will be released next week.

The African Union Commission and the Government of Zimbabwe will host joint World AIDS Day commemorations under the theme “Getting to Zero in Africa: Africa’s Responsibility, Everyone’s Responsibility”.
