With the New Year comes a list of resolutions, topped by a vow to get back in the gym. Despite all one’s good intentions, excuses crop up, and before you know it, you go from training four times a week, to twice, to putting it off until next week. Do not let your workout wardrobe be one of the reasons you fall behind. Wearing the right exercise clothing can make your workout more efficient and more enjoyable, when you consider the fabrics and styles that are best for your body and type of exercise.

Finding the best workout clothes depends on your level of activity and the types of exercise you plan to do, whether it is running, walking or yoga. Baggy pants are not feasible for cycling or spinning, and flowing tops will not keep you covered when you do the downward dog in yoga class. Look for apparel designed specifically for the type of exercise you will be doing, and try a few of your signature workout moves in the dressing room to be sure.

Fit comes first, so pay closer attention to this rather than just thinking about sizes, as some workout clothes tend to be smaller and more form fitting than regular clothes. Women look for items that have a small percentage of Spandex listed on the label as this allows for a greater range of motion during exercise. Men keep lengths and fit in check, your gear only needs to be loose enough to easily execute movement.

Fabrics are incredibly important for added comfort while training. You want to be able to move when stretching, bending, lifting weights or doing floor work, and avoid rough clothing that chaffs or irritates skin during repeated movement. Clothing made from polyester and Spandex is stretchy and durable, and they also keep you cooler and drier as they are lighter than cotton.

I am enjoying training in Nike’s Dri-Fit clothing, and I definitely notice a difference between their range and regular materials. Even for the lightest workouts, sweat and excess moisture is uncomfortable so you want to look out for exercise gear that draws moisture. Dri-Fit is just one example of technical or performance fabrics available on the market. They may cost more, but they will last longer. If you would rather wear natural fabrics, wool is great at drawing out moisture and will keep you warm in the winter.

Footwear is key to avoiding injuries and your choice is dependent on what kind of exercises you are engaging in. For most training, cross-trainers are the best option as they offer comfort, cushioning, and versatility.

Nowadays running shoes are designed specifically for different pro-nation patterns, which refers to how your foot rolls inwards or outwards when you walk and run.

This is very important to consider when buying running shoes so that you have the correct support from your footwear. You will also want a sport-specific shoe, say if you are playing basketball, football, or golf, for better enjoyment. Be picky about your workout socks because if they are too thick or thin you could get blisters, which can ruin a good workout.

For ladies, support is key and a sports bra is a better choice than a regular bra when working out. Sports bras have come a long way and you can find them in just about any style you need to accommodate your shape and the cut of your tops. They are also now made of the new, breathable materials, which are great for those who get overheated.

We do not do anything without our tech devices and sportswear has caught onto this. Our gear is as smart as our phones with sleek pockets and straps. This means you can get more out of your workout with apps to monitor your training. Some favourites include RunKeeper, MapMyRunand Nike+ Running.

The more frequently you exercise, the more important it is to wear the right clothing. Aside from being practical, the right outfit makes you feel like a million bucks, so you can hit the gym in style.
