Work on Mutare’s Geoff and Magamba roads has begun, raising expectations that motorists will finally be able to use pothole-free roads. Mutare City Council says works on the two roads, which had been temporarily halted, will be completed soon.

The contractor of the project downed tools late last year after the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) failed to release funds. Mutare’s public relations officer Mr Spren Mutiwi said Zinara had since paid the contractor.

“Good news to our esteemed residents, stakeholders and motorists using Geoff and Magamba roads. Work which was temporarily stopped last year is set to resume any time soon. The contractor is expected to be back on site and resume work after Zinara paid some funds,” he said.

Mr Mutiwi said the project was one of their top priorities this year as the local authority strived to improve service delivery. The contractor, Mr Mutiwi said, had since shown commitment to complete the work.

“Indications are that the contractor is committed to the completion of the project since earth-moving machines and other equipment are now being taken to the site,” he said.
