Appearing before magistrate Mr Tinashe Ndokera at the Chegutu Magistrates Court on Monday, Dadirai Nyachena (25) allegedly burnt Ashley Kanito (4) on the cheeks, hand and leg sometime this month.

Nyachena, who resides at house number 23193 Umvovo, also went on to pinch the kid on the cheeks before ironing his right foot for the “offence”.
After hearing screams from the accused’s house, neighbours rushed to investigate only to find Kanito wailing in agony with blisters on his face and leg.
The state, represented by prosecutor Mr Solomon Kanyoka, remanded Nyachena out of custody to July 15 for trial.

In another case, a man was sentenced to five months in prison for bashing his wife leaving her with a broken hand.
Sheldon Kawara was ordered to perform 175 hours of community service at the Chegutu Magistrates Court.

Sometime in May this year, Kawara beat his wife after a misunderstanding over the whereabouts of the accused’s passport.
The accused intended to travel to South Africa where his friend had found him a job.

It is alleged this did not go down well with the accused’s wife who allegedly hid the passport.
Asked by the magistrate why he had bashed his wife, Kawara said he had got wind of information that his wife had visited a prophet where she was told that he would never return if he goes to work in South Africa.

This led to her to conceal the passport.
The wife allegedly professed ignorance on the whereabouts of the document.

The two argued over the missing passport and this degenerated into a fight which saw Kawara breaking his wife’s hand.

In passing judgment Mr Ndokera said cases of domestic violence were on the rise with Kawara’s case being the third to be heard on that day.

“Such cases used to draw a penalty of fine but with the prevalence in domestic violence I sentence you to five months imprisonment which is wholly suspended considering that you (Kawara) perform 175 hours of community service,” he said.
