Woman granted protection order against violent hubby

A Harare woman places her deep freezer as reinforcement on her bedroom door every night as a shield to prevent her husband from physically abusing her, the Harare Civil Court heard yesterday.

Everjoy Mutini said her husband Phillip Mutini was in the habit of physically abusing her each time he comes home drunk.

Everjoy was seeking a protection order against Phillip whom she accused of attacking her with weapons.

“My life is in danger and that’s why I am seeking protection from the court. He is in the habit of attacking me with either a knife, axe or a screwdriver,” she said.

Mutini told Harare Civil Court magistrate Mrs Babra Masinire that she sustained serious injuries in October after being stabbed with a screwdriver all over the body by Phillip.

“I decided to put a deep freezer to support the bedroom door because each time he comes home drunk he physically abuses me for no reason.

“I sustained serious injuries on my left thigh and left rib after he stabbed me with a screwdriver,” said Mutini.

She claimed Phillip was in the habit of physically abusing her in front of their children.

“I used to report him to the police but he does not reform. That’s why I decided to bring him here (to court),” said Mutini.

Mutini said Phillip’s violent behaviour was affecting their children at school.

Responding to the allegations, Phillip said he was not opposed to Mutini’s application.

“I am not disputing anything; you can grant her the order as she pleases,” he said.

Mrs Masinire granted the order in Mutini’s favour which barred Phillip from physically or verbally abusing her.
