BUSINESSMAN Simon Rudland’s estranged wife Ann Leigh was yesterday fined $4 000 for damaging a Unifreight Africa Limited (UAL) truck, which was delivering fuel for a generator at her Borrowdale home. Magistrate Mr Eric Kadye also sentenced Leigh to a wholly suspended year in prison on condition that she does not commit a similar offence in the next three years.

She pleaded not guilty to malicious damage to property, but was convicted after a full trial. Represented by her lawyer Ms Beatrice Mtetwa, Leigh accused the Unifreight driver, Mr Thomas Mqanjelwa, of being a spy sent by her estranged husband Simon. Prosecuting, Ms Shambidzeni Fungura said on January 31 this year, Mqanjelwa was sent to deliver fuel for a generator by Rudland. Leigh accused him of trespassing and ordered him to leave.

Before Mqanjelwa could drive the Nissan NP300 truck out, Leigh rammed into the vehicle twice near the gate. The vehicle’s doors were damaged and repairs were pegged at $4 015,75.
