Witchcraft row ends in tragedy

Five Seke brothers allegedly teamed up to murder their uncle by setting him ablaze and attacking him with a knobkerrie, as they accused him of possessing goblins, the court heard.

One of the brothers, David Mahungo (28) of Chamunorwa Village, Chief Seke has since appeared in court charged with murder.

Mahungo who has pending charges of malicious damage to property on CRB 92/11/15 was not asked to plead to the charges.

He appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo who remanded him in custody to December 21. He was advised to seek bail at the High Court.

According to the indictment papers, Mahungo allegedly convened a meeting with his four brothers on Sunday to discuss issues to do with witchcraft in their family.

The court heard that they identified their now deceased uncle Musekiwa as being the source of their troubles. They allegedly teamed up and went to Musekiwa’s house in the same area.

On arrival, they started accusing him of possessing goblins that have been wreaking havoc in their lives. The court heard that Mahungo and his brothers took turns to beat up Musekiwa claiming that he was a wizard.

Further allegations are that the brothers manhandled the now deceased and set him ablaze. They also allegedly attacked him with a knobkerrie and further assaulted him with switches and blows.

Allegations are that Musekiwa died on the spot as a result of the injuries.

The matter was reported to the police leading to Mahungo’s arrest.
