RELATED STORY

“The police are still dealing with the escape of the two inmates as this is a criminal offence.
“The ZPS has also set up a board of inquiry to establish the circumstances surrounding the escape.”

Last December, a chief prison officer, identified as Chanakidzwa, gave 15 inmates a Christmas treat by releasing them from their cells after the stipulated time.
The treat, however, turned into a nightmare after the inmates scampered in different directions in a bid to escape.

Low-risk prisoners in the last stages of their sentences who are allowed outside came to the officer’s rescue as they rounded up most of the escaping inmates.
Nguwo, Tachi and Moyo, however, made good their  escape in the incident which is believed to be the first of its kind in the country’s history.
Chief Prison Officer Mthembo said Officer Chanakidzwa was suspended from duty while internal investigations are underway.-The Sunday Mail
