ZIMBABWE leave for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup today with coach Dav Whatmore confident his troops are not going to Australia and New Zealand just to make up the numbers.

The veteran coach has targeted a Super Eight finish from the Pool B that includes India, South, West Indies, Pakistan, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates.

“We are going to play three practice matches in Gisborne and a further two from the ICC before the World Cup,” said Whatmore.

“So, in total, it’s five matches”.

There was good news for the Zimbabwe camp on the eve of their departure when Whatmore said experienced all-rounder Prosper Utseya was on his way to recovery.

“He was injured three days ago but he is okay and he is coming back to competition and is under the able care of a physiotherapist.

“He will be ready for first game in Gisborne,” said Whatmore.

A former Pakistan coach, Whatmore said both Pool A and Pool B were very strong at the World Cup and challenged his players to give it their best shot.

“The preparations could not have been better under the circumstances. So we are pleased.

“Both pools are strong and it does not matter what group we are in. We just have to do our best and if you are doing your best, then you can have your fair share of victory.

“We know whom we are going to play against and we have to be prepared as much as we can,” said Whatmore.

The veteran coach said Zimbabwe have been poor performers away from home but he believes they could get results in this World Cup.

“Some of the conditions like the sub-continent are very difficult and are not the best conditions to play in away from home.

“But in this tournament we are not playing one team and we have a lot of teams also playing away from home,” he said. — Sportszone
