LONDON. – Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hit back at Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard by insisting no player is too good for the Gunners.
Gerrard recently said that he told Luis Suarez he was too good to go to the Gunners when Arsenal made a bid for him last summer.
Wenger’s bid of £40 000 001 was rejected by the Reds but it was all known Wenger is a keen admirer of the striker.
Suarez eventually moved to Barcelona this summer for a whopping £75 million but Wenger is adamant Suarez would have been the perfect fit at Arsenal.

Speaking at a Press conference yesterday ahead of this weekend’s Emirates Cup, Wenger said: “You’re never too good for Arsenal and Steven Gerrard knows that.
“But I can understand completely that he wanted him to stay because he wanted to play with him and have a chance of winning the Premier League. It didn’t happen and anyway Suarez left.”

Wenger has meanwhile, admitted there is a distinct possibility that Thomas Vermaelen could join Manchester United.
The Belgian defender has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford all summer and is set for crunch talks with Wenger to sort out his future.

Wenger insisted no deal was done but there was a good chance that Vermaelen could leave The Emirates. If he was to depart Wenger has reassured Arsenal fans he would definitely be replaced.

“At the moment Thomas Vermaelen is here, he is injured at the moment with a short-term injury but it could happen,” Wenger said.
“Yes, it is a possibility that he goes.

“If he goes we have to replace him because he is an important player in our squad. I expect him to stay but of course he has not played enough games last year.
“For me he is a very important player but I couldn’t give him the games that he wanted last year so we’ll see.”

Wenger said that he was not finished in the transfer market despite adding Southampton teenager Calum Chambers, Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez, Newcastle right-back Mathieu Debuchy and Nice goalkeeper David Ospina to his squad.

In fact, Wenger has declared himself “very happy” with Arsenal’s transfer business this summer – and he is ready to do more.
Sanchez, Debuchy, Ospina andChambers have all bolstered Wenger’s squad since the end of last season, while Bacary Sagna and Lukasz Fabianski left at the end of their contracts.

It has already been a busy summer of transfers and Wenger expects another flurry of activity before the window closes on August 31.
“I’m very happy with the business. I did what I wanted and still open to do more. We have to focus on the weekend.

“The window closes on August 31 but we’re a bit ahead of what we normally do because the availability on the market was earlier than before. Players have to go out before they come in. The bigger clubs have done their deals earlier. When one starts the others follow. But not a lot has happened since the World Cup.

“It will get busy again the last two weeks in August.
“It is August 1 and the transfer window closes on the 31st. It is a long time. We are a bit ahead of what we usually do because the availability on the market was bigger than before.”

“Many clubs decided to do it before the World Cup, and since the World Cup was over, not a lot has happened. But I think the second half of August, the 15th-30th, will be busy again.

“Everyone takes a breather at the moment because everyone checks in their preparation games what they still need. People have done the biggest part of what they want to do and the last part will be done after the preparation games to see what you miss.”

However, he did say he would not be signing Porto’s Colombian midfielder Juan Quintero, who had been linked with the club. The rumour mill has linked Arsenal with a number of players in recent weeks, including Colombia playmaker Quintero.
