Waverley Blankets owner Victor Eric Cohen, who died on Monday in South Africa, has been buried.

He was laid to rest at Warren Hills Cemetery in Harare yesterday. Hundreds of people from across the racial divide thronged the Jewish section of the cemetery to bid farewell to the renowned industrialist.

Cohen died of a lung disease at a hospital in Johannesburg. His son Glynn described him as a humble and generous man.

“He was held in high regard by people across all social and economic backgrounds and was well respected for his intelligence, wisdom, business acumen and strong work ethic,” he said.

“He was dearly loved and respected by all who met and worked with him. “The world has lost a truly remarkable man who will remain a legend, leaving behind a tremendous legacy.”

Advocate Thembinkosi Magwaliba, who first met the late Cohen as a client when he started his law firm in the 90s, said Cohen was an honest man.

“He did not keep grudges and wanted to live life to the fullest,” said Adv Magwaliba. “That is why he gave himself fully to his family, to his workers, to his friends and the country at large.”

Adv Magwaliba said Cohen left a legacy of an entrepreneurship spirit.

“He would be remembered mostly for Cone Textiles, which at one time was one of the largest employers in the country.”
