rising Zimbabwean motocross rider Regan Wasmuth made a promising start in the 2015 Monster Energy South African National Championships when he finished ninth overall in the 125cc Class during the opening round of this tough motorcycling event at Harrismith in Free State on Saturday.

On Saturday, Wasmuth, who turns 14 this month, qualified seventh in the 125 High School class, finished sixth in the first heat, then had a bad start in the second heat and went down making a pass; and this saw him finishing ninth overall with 30 points.

Considering he is the youngest in the class, this is a great result and leaves him tied sixth in the South African National Championships points standings after round one.

Wasmuth’s father and trainer, Warren, was pleased with his son’s overall performance at Harrismith on Saturday.

“We had unbelievable support for this race and Regan had to rely on all his experience to mix it up in this class and this was all made possible by the great support we received from Thor Racing, Racestar Graffix, Fuchs Silkolene, Lauren-Doug Shenk and Ashleigh Wasmuth,” Warren Wasmuth said.

Another top Zimbabwean junior rider Wade Ashwell also took part in the 125 High School class on Saturday but found the going tough as he finished 12th overall with 22 points.

South Africa’s Charl van Eeden emerged as the top dog in this class with 47 points although he shared the same points with second-placed Drco van der Westhuizen.

Another exciting South African rider Joshua Mlimi finished third overall with 37 points.

Two other Zimbabwean riders Jayden Ashwell and Kuda Mhene (Jnr) took part in the same event on Saturday.
